.After the success of her 1940 book I Married
Adventure, Osa Johnson was contacted to pen three follow up novels. The
first of these "pre-quels" was entitled Four Years in Paradise and
recounted the time she and her explorer husband Martin Johnson spent filming
in the wilds of the Northern Frontier District of Kenya. Using never before
seen stock footage from their travels, Osa constructed the silent film
AFRICAN PARADISE to present during her national and international book
signing events.
The travel lecture film played an integral part of early cinema and it remains a mainstay today. Unfortunately most early travelogues, particularly those spanning the 1930-70s have been lost as often the original Kodachrome films were projected until the prints actually disintegrated.
AFRICAN PARADISE is an amazing exception to this sad rule. “Lost” for over 50 years, one pristine print of this film
was found by a Safari Museum volunteer.
The film was originally silent, but this version has sound overlaid for
use in the 2007 Safari Museum Film Festival.
Specials include presentations from the festival featuring Dr. Karen Ray of Washburn University in
Topeka and Richard Houston, President of EleFence International
